The skin is our largest organ and performs many functions important to good health beyond just making us look good. Very simply, our skin is our first line of defense. It serves as a barrier between our bodies and the outside world. It protects us from germs, bacteria and the harmful effects of UV rays. Healthy skin also regulates body temperature and helps filter out toxins.
Types of Skin Issues
Oily Skin
The most common skin complaint among men is oily skin. This is due to excessive sebum production that is naturally occurring in men. Singapore’s hot and humid climate would further aggravate the problem at hand.
Solution: There are blotting papers, which are specially designed absorbent papers that pull oil from the skin. It offers a quick solution for one’s oily skin, allowing for a shine less appearance. However, it will not solve the excessive sebum production problem in the skin.
Prevention: Contrary to traditional myth, excessive cleaning won't solve this issue. Instead, the application of moisturizers will trick your skin into thinking it is well-hydrated, allowing for effective control of your sebaceous glands. Do look for products that allows for “oil control”. It will keep your face shine-free throughout the day while providing essential hydration.

Dry Skin
It is characterized by a lack of the appropriate amount of moisture in the most superficial layer of the skin. Though one of the causes would be environmental factors such as low humidity and cold temperature. It is becoming more prevalent in Singapore due to us working in air-conditioned environment. People who have dry skin can often find rough, dry, red patches on their skin.
Solution: When dealing with dry skin, remember the importance of the hydration approach, taking measures to maximize skin hydration. The best time to apply moisturizer would be after your shower as it would assist in your skin’s ability to retain moisture. In addition, to restore moisture, choose a heavier, oil-based moisturizer containing ingredients that help keep your skin hydrated. Petrolatum-based products are best for dry or cracked skin.
Prevention: As established, our office environment is one of the causes for the dry skin. The utilization of a humidifier in rooms (Office) where you spend a lot of time would add moisture to the air thus preventing your skin from drying. Furthermore, you could apply a layer of moisturizer before heading out, as this help to reduce external factors from attacking your face and drying it out.

Acne
It is characterized by red pimples that typically appear on the face and neck and is typically a result from inflammation or infection of oil-producing sebaceous glands. Depending on its severity, acne can lead to scarring of the skin, causing frustration and emotional distress. It goes hand-n-hand with oily skin, as high occurrence of one would increase the chance of the other.
Solution: Look for products containing benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient. Additionally, products containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acids may help with mild and moderate acne. Furthermore, protecting your skin from the sun would reduce the risk of skin aggravation.
Prevention: The importance of cleansing and exfoliate your skin would take precedence over any preventive approach. It is the direct counter to the built up of oil and infection of said glands. Cleansing would help clear your pores and remove any dirt and dead skin, while exfoliating would allow for new skin to grow.

3 Step Skincare Routine
Step 1: Cleanser
To begin wash your hands using soap and water, with the face cleanser placed directly onto your clean hands. Rub together and massage the cleanser onto your face. Rinse with water at room temperature as water that’s warm or too hot would irritate the skin and dry it out. Pat dry with a clean towel.
Step 2: Toner
It’s time to prep it with a toner or toning lotion. This helps to hydrate and soften the skin so that it can better absorb skincare ingredients in the skincare products that follow. Dap the lotion onto your finger tips and pat gently around your face, paying special attention to the crevices around your face.
Step 3: Moisturizer
Place sufficient amount on your palm, rub together and apply over your face. Going in a circular motion to ensure full coverage. This step would create a protective film over the skin, allowing it to go about its daily business, maintain the health of the skin barrier, keeping the skin protected and hydrated all day long.
